The Sandhill Cranes at Sauvie Island

October 19, 2020

Birding at Sauvie Island

I decided to check out a report of there being a thousand Sandhill Cranes out on Sauvie Island, west of the city of Portland. Given they move around a lot, and that the state wildlife agency manages a large area of the island as a refuge and wildlife area, they could be just about anywhere. Unfortunately, I could hear a lot of them off in the distance, but no where near the roads I was taking. Eventually I found an area with scattered pairs and smaller groups and got off a few shots using my 300mm lens. This will certainly motivate me to go back out there soon!
